FAQ — World Time Zones
Common questions about this page — answers customized for the data shown above.
A time zone group is a named time zone abbreviation like EST (Eastern Standard Time), PST (Pacific Standard Time), CET (Central European Time), or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Each abbreviation can map to several IANA time zones that share the same UTC offset and DST rules.
Time zones reflect both physical longitude and political decisions. Multiple regions of the world end up at the same UTC offset for different reasons — geographical (similar longitude), historical (colonial-era alignment), or political (matching a major partner country).
Abbreviations (EST, PST, CET …) are short, common, and ambiguous — different places use them for different offsets. IANA names (America/New_York, Europe/London) are precise, unambiguous, and the global computing standard. Always use IANA names in code and databases.
Use the time zone converter — enter your source zone and time, pick a destination zone, and it handles DST transitions automatically. It accepts both abbreviations and IANA names.
CST is the worst offender: it can mean Central Standard Time (UTC-6, North America), China Standard Time (UTC+8), or Cuba Standard Time (UTC-5). Always check the context or use an IANA name for unambiguous reference.
Click any time zone in the list above to see all the countries (and major cities) using that zone. The all countries page also lists each country's time zone(s) for quick lookup.
The interactive time zone map shows every time zone in geographic context, color-coded by UTC offset.
