FAQ — Military Time & Zone Letters
Common questions about this page — answers customized for the data shown above.
Military time uses a 24-hour clock (00:00 to 23:59) with leading zeros, often written without colons (e.g., 0930 for 9:30 AM, 1745 for 5:45 PM). It also uses single-letter zone designators — Zulu (Z) for UTC, Echo (E) for UTC-5, and so on — to make times unambiguous across time zones.
Each letter A–Z (excluding J) represents a UTC offset. Z (Zulu) = UTC. A = UTC+1, B = UTC+2, … M = UTC+12. N = UTC-1, O = UTC-2, … Y = UTC-12. J (Juliet) is reserved for the observer's local time. The letters give pilots, sailors, and military personnel a quick, unambiguous way to communicate times globally.
Zulu time is identical to UTC — the same instant, written in 24-hour format with a 'Z' suffix (e.g., 1430Z = 14:30 UTC). 'Zulu' comes from the NATO phonetic alphabet letter for 'Z'.
J (Juliet) was traditionally reserved for the observer's own local time — essentially a placeholder. To avoid confusion, J was excluded from the formal UTC offset alphabet so that A through M and N through Y could map cleanly to positive and negative offsets respectively.
For times before noon: military 0930 = civilian 9:30 AM. For times after noon: subtract 12 from the hour: military 1745 → 17 - 12 = 5, so civilian 5:45 PM. Midnight is 0000 in military and 12:00 AM in civilian.
